Couples’ Club May 2 Kickoff Results and News

The 2008 Couples’ Club got off to a helluva start, with 24 couples entering.  On a fabulous Spring evening, couples were paired into 4-player teams for a Captain’s Choice game on the front 9.   Following the round there was Tex-Mex from Moe’s, drinks and prizes in the Clubhouse.

The big winners were Harding and Brenda Kirkley, paired with Al and Donna Tkach, making six birdies in a row to shoot a 6-under 30!  Of the remaining 11 foursomes, seven were tied for second place with scores of 33.  All of the teams were under par, and 11 of the 12 teams were within two strokes of each other.  Through a scorecard playoff system (comprehensible only to Randall James and Stephen Hawking), two of the seven groups shooting 33 were declared 2nd  (McGonigle & McGuire) and 3rd-place (Walton & Stanley/Cope) winners.  Congratulations are in order for the winners as well as the rest, as everyone played above average and were reasonably courteous to their spouses and partners.

As in previous years, we will keep a running tally of points accumulated during the season in pursuit of the much-coveted Brown Jug award, currently held by (who else?) Al and Donna Tkach.  Good luck to all those seeking this esteemed honor!  For this first event, all 7 teams that shot the 2nd low score of 33 will receive 2nd place points.

This season, every effort will be made to arrange the pairings so that, as much as possible, all foursomes will have reasonably balanced strength.  In addition, repeat pairings will be avoided, so as to maximize the chance to meet new people.  Later in the season we will attempt to introduce an informal handicapping system that will make it feasible to allow couples to choose their couple partners, without concern about this leading to uneven (and unfair) foursome strength.

Regarding formats, the most frequent feedback comment is that people prefer the straight Captain’s Choice.  For now, this will be our default format, though we will be spicing it up a bit with Long Drive and Closest-to-the-pin prizes.  Later, handicapped events will use other formats (to be determined).  Suggestions are welcome.

We will also include the popular “Hidden-bonus-point-in-the-website” feature.  The current bonus question is “What was the first name of Lee Trevino’s long-time caddie?” For the extra point, write the answer on your scorecard for the May 23 event.

Our next event is Friday, May 23 at 5:30 pm, a Captain’s Choice.  For this and all future events, please sign up by Wednesday 6pm for the sake of fair, thoughtful pairings and accurate food arrangements.  Those showing up at the last minute will be allowed to play if there’s room, but due to pairing considerations, they may or may not be a part of the competition, or the eating!
